Digital printing has been around for many years now and the many advantages over traditional flexographic and gravure printing are growing all the time. CS Labels are the UK’s award-winning experts on the topic and they work with brewers of all sizes.

Nathan Daniel, sales manager for the Willenhall-based printer, told us: “Our clients in brewing use digital labels for many reasons. It can be a real gamechanger when it comes to making your brand stand out on the shelf. Our artwork team can also offer advice on how to enhance your design specifically for a digital press. We’ve pretty much been there and seen everything in the past so we know what works and what doesn’t. In addition, extra special effects are also much simpler and easier with digital. We offer a system called color-logic (we were the first Xeikon label printer in Europe to implement this). Color-logic replaces foiling completely and actually provides a more spectacular effect to help increase sales. It is a more cost-effective solution than foil – it prints in one pass, so no need for the extra hot foil process. Colorlogic was used recently by the pop band Madness who have brewed their own beer ‘Gladness’ with the help of Growler. The work CS Labels did won the 2013 Flexo award for best Digital Print. “

To the unenlightened, digital may sound expensive and only suitable for small runs or special editions. But in reality, breweries of all sizes, including the larger outfits, can get lots of value from digital beer labelsBecause of the short lead times the need to hold stock is greatly reduced, and this is combined with the fact that CS Labels own a Xeikon 500mm wide press which has much larger capacities than other printers in this field – they are the largest Xeikon house in Europe. Personalisation is also another huge advantage. Effectively each digital label is unique and this means that the ability to print variable data or even individual personal information (think the ‘Share a Coke’ campaign) such as numbers on products or names is done at the time of print and at no extra cost – no overprinting required.

And what about the future? Well CS Labels has just launched a new interactive label application called Augmented Reality, or AR for short. AR enables consumers to watch exciting interactive videos or online content just by looking at the graphics on a bottle, box or packet through a mobile phone or tablet. Nathan told us: “It means customers can connect on a totally new level with your brand. The app enables clients to find out more about the products they use through entertaining videos, then give feedback, join forums, surf the net and even buy products and services from their touchscreen.” AR went down a storm at this year’s Beer X and the Packaging Innovations show. It is available now and can be branded for customers, with their own logo, etc.

So it seems that the future is bright, the future is digital.

And if you haven’t looked at your labels and packaging for a while, or even if you are starting out, then maybe digital could be the route for you to maximise sales.
