February 2014 has seen our installation of the UK’s first Xeikon digital label press equipped with ICE toner technology.

This has enabled us to increase the range of substrates we are able to print digital labels.

This blog will take a closer look at one of these materials, POLYETHYLENE.

Polyethylene is a thermoplastic commodity heavily used in consumer products.

Over 60 million tons of the material are produced worldwide every year.

The key characteristics are listed below:

•  Soft and flexible
•  Good conformability and squeezability
•  Temperature sensitive
•  Good chemical resistance
•  Limited UV/Outdoor capabilities
•  Requires corona or topcoat

•  Clear PE is slightly ’milky’
•  Available in Clear, White and Matte

Why use PE for your digital label application?

Unlike Polypropylene, PE is able to stretch in both directions.

This makes it ideal for products that are squeezed, such as a shampoo bottle labels or plastic tomato ketchup bottle labels.

This trait also makes it ideal for applying to unusual shaped packaging.
