A Consultative Solution

When Neptune rum presented CS Labels with an already existing label design, it explained that much of the detail was lost from a distance or in the light – so the label was not working as well as it should.

Through a thorough consultation and a process trialling three different gold shades, it was agreed that the foil colour would change to a new shade – coined 'old gold' – consistent with the Neptune theme.

The level of detail on Neptune's face is so important and whilst the change in the gold tone did make a difference, it still lacked in having a significant impact. The challenge was all about the detail in Neptune's head and capturing the creases in his face, the look in his eyes and the texture of his hair, whilst keeping the quality absolutely consistent.

The solution was a print on Tintoretto Gesso Wet Strength substrate giving a distressed style, and a shape of Neptune's head was printed in bold black. The black shape was then covered with foil with specific areas omitted from the foil block allowing the dark under-colour to show through creating a frame on the gold details. This was then embossed in tiny areas picked out from all over the label.

Judges Comments

CS Labels has triumphed in this hotly contested category thanks to some "fantastic print and finishing that overcame some serious technical challenges", according to the judges.

The Judges were particularly overwhelmed by the level of detail that went into the label the company produced for Neptune Rum. Design details on the brand’s existing label were lost from a distance or in the light, so the drinks company wanted a labelling solution that delivered its icon more effectively.
