The usage of self adhesive labels are commonplace everywhere you look today and most contain a self adhesive element somewhere on the packaging.  Easy and quick, as well as having the ability to contain long-lasting, stunning design features, it’s no surprise to see their popularity amongst companies looking to make an impression.

As technology has progressed, so has the expectation of the consumer. The quality of the label is often the attraction of a product for a consumer, so wouldn’t having the best possible label be the goal to strive for?

Why Should I Use Self Adhesive Labels For My Products?

The main attraction of using a self adhesive label is for its versatility – not only do they offer a clear indication of what the product is, but by designing your own bespoke label, you can feature a multitude of other elements. Whether you’re looking at displaying information about the product, to more-modern innovations such as QR codes that take browsers of your products to a website, or even Augmented Reality that can create a virtual environment around your product. What’s more, the label acts as an advertisement tool for your brand – so by implementing the latest in printing technology, you’ll be creating better-looking labels and enjoy all that digital print can offer.

The Elements of a Self Adhesive Label.

Used widely upon many products that you’ll see on the shelf of a supermarket, self adhesive labels combine three components; the backing (release) paper, a layer of adhesive and the face material that incorporates the intended design of the label.

Each element consists of:

Label Liner. Mostly made from paper, the release liner is coated with silicone on one side which allows for the easy-peel of the finished label. Due to some jobs requiring large volumes to be created at high speed, other materials (such as plastics) may be used as a release liner, as the common paper material used is likely to break. Here at CS labels, we use Polyethylene, Gloss and Matt Polypropylene, as well as high-strength Semi-Glossed and Metallised paper.

The Adhesive. The type of adhesive that is used will depend on the application that the label is intended for. As an example, items that require the label to be peeled off with ease (such as books, clothing, fruit etc) will need something that will leave little residue behind as it’s peeled off. Peel back labels known as peel and reveal labels like these cosmetic labels can go a step further with the addition of the ability to re-adhere the label. For other items, that don’t require the label to be peeled off and/or have a need for the label to be robust, will need to be ‘hot tacked’ to ensure that the adhesive will stick to the item. There are many different kinds of adhesives that can be used for most applications – solvent, hot melt, UV and water-based solutions are examples of these.

Adhesive Face. There are many different kinds of materials that can be used to produce the face of the label but they will mainly fit under two categories; paper and plastic/synthetic material. Using paper, you can are able to choose between a coated or uncoated finish, which provides the product with a number of differing aesthetic looks. The types of plastic/synthetic materials that can be used include polyethylene, polyester and polypropylene – which as the most-commonly used, is noted for its hardwearing and print qualities, as well as the low cost it takes to produce.
